The Western Spiritualist Church of Universal Brotherhood (UBSC) was founded in March, 1981, by Reverend Mary Hietanen. It was incorporated as a society in the Province of British Columbia, Canada, on 25 March 1987.

Reverend Mary Hietenan, Founding Minister Born 23 January 1923, Birkenhead, England, Reverend Mary Hietanen passed into Spirit on Sunday,  26 July 2009, in Surrey, BC Mary Hietanen joined the Vancouver Psychic Society in 1972 and became an active member, even serving as president for several years and establishing the Broadway and Cambie location. In March, 1981, Mary founded The Western Spiritualist Church of Universal Brotherhood (UBSC). Her love of Spiritualism inspired her to become a minister, and in May, 1982, she was ordained as a minister of the International Spiritualist Alliance. Mary was an excellent medium and a wonderfully gifted healer. She was dedicated to her church and, until she became ill, never missed a Sunday service. She was a fun-loving, warm, most kind person, who loved her family, her friends, her garden, and animals, especially cats. Mary loved to laugh and sing and dance. She was a free spirit, and now her spirit is free.

Tribute to our dear Mother Mary

As she leaves us, let her go
For in our hearts we’ll always know
The love we shared will never die
Even as the years go by
Just open up as she has taught
To the spirit within she always sought
And let her guidance be the gift she gives
Knowing that her spirit lives
She’ll cradle you in times of strife
She’ll celebrate the best of life
And by her light she will be known
As she builds her spirit home
Keeping a place for you and I
For the love we shared will never die
She built her church for us on earth
So we can learn of our spiritual birth
She leaves us with her courage and strength
That spanned her lifetime and all its length
In doing what she felt was right
Helping others to find their light
So as she leaves us let her go
Honour what she valued so
To learn, to love, and to find
The spirit within through the higher mind
So as she leaves us say no sad goodbyes
For the love we shared never dies
